About UsReady to Rent is a pro bono opportunity for Wisconsin Law students.
Students participating in Ready to Rent teach classes to jail inmates to prepare them to reenter the rental housing market. Class materials include lessons about finding housing with a criminal record, as well as anticipating and avoiding common rental problems. Classes are held at the Ferris Center (extension of the Dane County Jail) on Monday nights from 8:00-9:30pm. Students work in teams of 2-3 to lead each class. Carpooling is available. To participate, students are required to attend two mandatory training sessions: 1) a housing law training at the law school, and 2) a jail training at the Public Safety Building. |
Our History |
The Ready to Rent program was started by former Wisconsin Law student Everett Mitchell. Since its inception, the program has been hosted by Madison Area Urban Ministry (MUM). In the spring of 2013, Neighborhood Law Clinic (NLC) students started assisting MUM. Ready to Rent was added to Wisconsin Law School's pro bono program in the fall of 2014. The Ready to Rent pro bono project is supervised by NLC Director Mitch.
